Ballyduff Central N.S. is a four-teacher mixed primary
school situated in North Kerry. The present school was
built in the 60s with an extension built in the 80s.
A school has existed on the site since 1839. The school
has an enrollment of about a 100 pupils at present.
The children are very involved in sport with hurling,
football, soccer, and basketball being the main sports.
Each week a G.A.A coach attends the school, hurling
one week and football the next. These are provided by
Kerry Co. Board in conjunction with the Munster Council.
John Dillon is our football coach.
He takes children from 1st to 6th class. Paudie County
and Maurice Leahy are our hurling coaches. Children
from infants to 6th class are involved in hurling training.

We are fortunate to have a Rural Co-ordinator in
our school. She is shared between four schools. The
Rural Co-ordinator is responsible for early intervention
in our school. She also organises a number of parent
courses as well as parental involvement in the classroom.
The boys in 6th class are currently taking part in a
woodwork course for lads and dads in Causeway Comprehensive
School. Children in 3rd and 4th class are at present
involved in Maths for fun. Six parents have very kindly
volunteered to play fun maths games with the children
every Thursday for six weeks. |
We live adjacent to the ancient monastic
settlement at Rattoo. This site
boasts among other things of one of the few intact Round
Towers in Ireland. Children in 5th and 6th class visited
the Rattoo round tower recently as part of a history project. |
For local history week
we took the children out and about in the community.
We visited the local heritage museum the Cashen fishing
village and Rattoo monastic settlement. We brought in
local people to talk about Ballyduff long ago. A committee
of teachers, local people and children made a booklet
of the local history. We have published it in pdf form
on our site. If you wish to read it click here.
You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read it.

We are very busy at present. For world
book day all classes worked very hard. Children in the
infants room dressed up as their favourite characters
and we invited parents in to the watch their fashion
show. Children in 5th and 6th class wrote lovely stories
for world book day which they read to the children in
Infants. We were very lucky to recieve a visit from
local author Gabriel Fitzmaurice, he entertained all
classes with humorous stories and poems.
We are all busy rehearsing for our upcoming concert.
1st and 2nd class are busy preparing for their first
Confession on the 6th of April and their first Communion
in May. 5th and 6th are busy preparing for their Confirmation
on the 4th of April.
